Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

October 20, 2025

Arrival day.  Travel was smooth and I made it to my hotel with just some minor jet lag.  Saint Jean-Pied-de-Port is a stunning town that is nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees.  I am in Basque Country which is interesting because Boise has the largest Basque population in the US.  Pilgrims traditionally begin their journey here and there is an official Pilgrims’ Office that I visited to get my Camino Passport.  Also interesting is the local wine is called Irouleguy and it dates back to the 12th century and it is one of France’s smallest wineries.  It was originally cultivated by monks to supply pilgrims with good luck and strength for the Camino.  I’ve enjoyed two glasses so far.

Tomorrow will be a big day going over the Pyrenees.  Likely looking at 16 miles with 3,700 ft of elevation gain and loss.  Thank you for the text messages of love and kindness.  They are filling my cup.

Love- Ryan
