Recreational Fitness

I need to remember to take more photos.  I only took one today and that was of the town I was leaving.  I guess I didn’t see anything more noteworthy than what I have been looking at from my the past hikes.

Today was just under 16 miles at 2K feet of ascent and decline.  These numbers are becoming to feel right out of central casting but I think that is a common output of doing the Camino.  One thing that I do find odd is while I think I am getting a lot of exercise and my clothing is getting looser than when I started, my Garmin seems to think that my fitness level is ‘recreational’.  I don’t know what algorithm they are using but I would classify what I am doing as recreational.  I don’t even recreationally walk when I am playing golf.  Technology…. Whatevs.

I was recommended a book to listen to called The Calamity Club.  I started it today and made it a full 10 minutes.  Just wasn’t feeling it so I had to transition to something else- How to Not Die in Prison: A Survival Guide.  Now this is a great book…. And really scary to listen to.  According to my answers on the self evaluation, I am not ‘prison ready’.  No shit.

Tomorrow is a big day… 18 miles or so and then the next two days are 12 milers and then I am done.  Somebody asked me yesterday if I was going to travel on to a town called Finisteere which is another 3 day hike past Santiago.  It was once thought as the end of the world and I guess they have spectacular sunsets.  I said I would rather fly coach back to the US… a reference that I don’t think landed with the professional backpacker who had a patch of Bernie Sanders with his famous winter gloves sewn to his backpack.  Humble brag, I also have a pair of Bernie Sanders mitts that I got in Vermont on a ski trip.

No after this I envision a few days of big steaks, full body reds, and transportation that doesn’t involve hiking poles.

Love Ryan
